Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Statistik (STIS) merupakan institusi pendidikan kedinasan dibawah naungan Badan Pusat Statistik Republik Indonesia (BPS RI) dan telah mengalami peningkatan status dari Akademi Ilmu Statistik (AIS). AIS berdiri berdasarkan Surat Keputusan Perdana Menteri Indonesia (pada waktu itu, Ir. H. Djuanda) Nomor 377/PM/1958, Tanggal 11 Agustus 1958.
Pada awal mula berdirinya, AIS mendapat bantuan dana dan tenaga ahli dari Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa (PBB). Bantuan disalurkan melalui Statistical Research and Development Centre yaitu lembaga yang didirikan oleh pemerintah Indonesia cq, BPS bekerjasama dengan Badan PBB, United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
Tahun 1964, BPS membuka Perguruan Tinggi Ilmu Statistik (PTIS) dengan mahasiswa yang terdiri dari lulusan AIS dan dosen berasal dari PBB serta alumni AIS. Pada tahun 1965 bantuan ini terhenti karena Indonesia keluar dari PBB dan sejak itu PTIS ditutup. Walupun PTIS sudah tidak beroperasi, AIS tetap melaksanakan proses pendidikan. Pada tahun 1995-1996 dilakukan usaha meningkatkan pendidikan ahli madya statistik (D-III) menjadi pendidikan ahli statistik (D-IV).
Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi (Ditjen Dikti) melalui Surat Keputusan Nomor 295/D/T/97 Tanggal 24 Pebruari 1997 mengijinkan BPS menyelenggarakan Program Diploma IV. Kemudian setelah itu, diterbitkan Keppres No.163 Tahun 1998 tentang STIS di bawah naungan BPS, sehingga sejak saat itu berdirilah STIS. Sesuai dengan Keppres tersebut, status STIS adalah sekolah tinggi kedinasan yang pembinaan teknisnya dilaksanakan oleh Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan (sekarang Menteri Pendidikan Nasional), dan pembinaan secara fungsional dilaksanakan oleh Kepala BPS RI.
